MySpace.com
As teachers of computers and technology, we feel it is important to let you, the parents, know that many of our students are on line in sites where they can express themselves at home. Some of these sites become known to us because of discussions we have in our classes regarding the safety of these areas. Use of these sites are not allowed in school, but we are getting information from students that other students spend a great deal of after school and evening time in these sites. We are particularly concerned about the amount of time some of the students are using for online chats, discussions, blogging, journaling, pictures, etc. But more importantly, we are concerned about the personal information they are putting on these sites and the ability of a perpetrator to locate them. In this case, less information is better. The Washington Post recently had an article where a girl's funeral was discussed and the fact that the perpetrator in this case met her on a site called MySpace.com. Many of our students spend hours on MySpace.com. This article made us even more sure that it is important that the parents of our students at Kennebunk High School understand and know that online activity can be dangerous.
We feel it is important for you to be informed and knowledgeable about what could happen in a situation such as that mentioned above where a student got involved with an older adult online. The students frequently don't realize that by just putting in where they are from "Kennebunk High School" and their first name, they can be found by someone who really wants to find them. We are attaching a page for you to go to that may help you check and see what is being written on-line. Hopefully your student is not giving out real information that can be tracked back to him/her. We are doing this just to give you a heads-up and to give you some tools that you can use to help keep your student safe.
